Central College opens new window to the design world

21 May 2007

With the creative industries in Scotland experiencing a boom, Central College of Commerce has marked the restructuring and the re-launch of the Higher National (HN) Computer Art and Design course by launching a new web site which aims to offer budding designers a glimpse into the creative opportunities available at the college and beyond.

As well as providing an insight into what the Computer Art and Design course involves, visitors to the new web site can also view a gallery of previous students’ work and read about their current success in an industry. David Eaton, Course Leader of Computer Art and Design at Central College, worked alongside the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and other Scottish colleges to redevelop the content of the Computer Art and Design course, which aims to produce candidates that can bring creative skills to the development of digital projects, from games to the web.

Recent finding compiled by Scottish Enterprise's Knowledge Exchange indicates that Scottish creative industries supports more than 100,000 strong workforce who are responsible for generating annual sales of around £5 billion a year, 4% of Scotland’s GDP. Taking into consideration these impressive figures it is not surprising that Scotland’s creative industries are becoming not only a vital part of the Scottish Economy but are also an ever more attractive industry to work for. So much so that creative courses are now in demand.

David Eaton said: “Recent evidence from Scottish Enterprise shows the importance of the Creative Industries within Scotland. It is very encouraging that so many talented people are choosing Art and Design as a career choice. Our new Computer Art and Design course reflects this current trend and has been structured in such a way that it allows our students to develop industry standard skills that will prepare them for an exciting career in the field of Computer Art and Design.”

Kim Beveridge completed the Computer Art and Design course at Central College and went on to graduate with a First Class Honours Degree in Time-Based Art from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. She has since produced films for the Scottish National Theatre, as well as a number of freelance projects and recently returned to Central College to teach on the Computer Art and Design course.

Kim said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my time studying at Central College and I feel the skills I developed acted as a catalyst for me to achieve my goals. Redeveloping the content of the Computer Art and Design course will help to further prepare students for a career in this highly competitive industry.”
