Hundreds of new jobs are to be created through the development of a new Carphone Warehouse centre at Irlam.
Carphone Warehouse has announced plans to invest 8.5 million in a new Opal Telecom centre which will act as its national engineering headquarters.
Currently, a Carphone Warehouse office site at Irlam houses 200 workers, a number that will increase to 500 in the new site, based nearby.
Carphone Warehouse acquired Opal in 2002.
"Irlam will be the headquarters of the engineering backbone for the Talk Talk network," Graham Chisnall of Carphone Warehouse told the Manchester Evening News. "We have 200 staff there already but over the next few years 300 jobs will be created"
The new building is due to be completely developed by February 2008. The development is expected to provide a significant boost for the local economy.
Carphone Warehouse has posted strong results for the end of 2006, with overall sales up by 7.3 per cent in the 13 weeks up to the end of December, and retail sales up by almost 20 per cent to 571.3 million
