The north-east law practice Dickinson Dees is set to create 50 new jobs in the York area as it merges with commercial law firm Philip Ashworth & Company.
According to the York Press, rival company John Yeomans has welcomed the move, stating that it is "great news for the city".
Mr Yeomans, who is also chairman of the 80-member York Professional Initiative (YPI), said: "The fact that they have come to York as a springboard to begin a drive into the Yorkshire legal market is great news.
He added that York can offer the legal sector "the same excellence" as Leeds at competitive prices and that the move supports the objectives of the YPI, which are to promote York as a city of business and raise the profile of the professional and financial sectors.
Robin Bloom, senior partner at Dickinson Dees, continued that the locality will become more alert to the opportunities due to the presence of major professional advisers in the community.
Meanwhile, prime minister Tony Blair has revealed that he will take a personal interest in the results of a review into the future of York's economy, entitled Future York, according to the newspaper.
