Some 17 per cent of employers in the north-west, including managers of accountancy firms, intend to take on more staff from January, according to a new survey.
Manpower's Employment Outlook Survey found that local regeneration plans and investment in Liverpool and Manchester are resulting in employers "crying out" for skilled candidates.
Kim Collins, Manpower's Operations Manager in the north-west, told the Nelson Leader: "Continued demand for staff makes this very much a candidate market.
"Many employers are crying out for people with the right skills - in particular those with good customer service skills, qualified accountants, and experienced secretaries and Pas [personal assistants]."
She added that jobseekers are therefore in a "great position" to negotiate good pay rates and benefits.
At a regional level, the survey showed the north-east and Scotland to have the highest employment activity.
